So I had a WTF moment today, peeps. I know, I know, another one….. yeah yeah. But this one is important! I mean, really, unequivocally, seriously, all-encompassingly important to EVERYONE.
Maxime Bermier, of the People’s Party of Canada (PPC) a fairly recent right-wing party, has stated that climate change is not a man-made phenomenon, but rather a naturally occurring aspect of our environment.
Well….ok, if he wants to disagree with hundreds of scientists worldwide and the United Nations climate change panel, that’s his prerogative…at least five of the six political parties participating in this year’s election agree it is a serious issue. Most Canadians do too.
Anyway, one party leader decided arbitrarily there is no climate change and as a result Elections Canada has declared any organization (environmental or otherwise) could lose their tax exempt status and open a quagmire of legalities for participating in partisanship, since Bermier uttering this questionable phrase apparently makes this issue affiliated with the PPC and anyone taking a stance on it is thereby acting illegally.
Sound confusing? Yep. Sound scary? Fuck yes.
Doesn’t sound very democratic, as a matter of fact, either.
I always hesitate to write blog posts about politics as, to be honest, I am not very knowledgeable about the political machine. I took a college course on basic Canadian politics, and it was the best thing I ever did. I learned a lot and came away with a reasonable understanding of how things work. (Thank you Mr. Maltais!) But I am by no means an expert and most of the rhetoric and strategies elude me. And maybe this is one of those times ignorance is bliss – I can look at this situation and see it from a purely logical perspective without all the electoral claptrap getting in the way.
Here’s the thing: Elections Canada has rules in place to provide checks and balances for the parties as they proselytize and promote their platforms prior to the election in the hopes of winning all the votes. These rules keep them honest (bahahahahaha!) supposedly, and keeps everyone walking the tightrope of legitimacy to ensure a fair fight.
The partisan rule is designed to protect citizens from unfair advertising by political parties which may cause an individual to make a choice based on the opinion of the party rather than on the facts of the issue. It’s meant to allow fair representation of the platforms and issues at hand.
An example of partisan activity would be…well….yeah it would be the gas pump stickers the Ontario government’s Progressive Conservative (PC) party that all gas stations are forced to use under penalty of fines. Are those stickers ACTUAL facts? No, they are PC opinion, and because they are currently running the show, they can do this. If there were a provincial election, it would be considered unfair advertising meant to sway voters’ opinions.
This is enough political stuff for me. I’m getting to my point.
What the fuck?
Yeah, I said it. (If anyone will you know it’s me!)
So what EC is saying is no one can refute Bermier’s claim that climate change is natural without accusations of partisanship and tax status revisions. Groups that are and have always been non-profit will suddenly be treated differently and will lose their efficacy because costs will be prohibitive to their continued operations. As a result, we are hearing crickets out there.
That’s not only a ridiculous notion, but quite frankly, it’s also a dangerous one.
Putting a gag order on climate change information has no place in our electoral process; climate change is a HUGE issue, and one which should be first and foremost the platform of every leader. I mean, if the environment goes kaput, so do all those pretty promises the leaders make to juzj up their party’s popularity before and after election day. There won’t be a functioning society to govern anymore.
As a society, especially a society facing a very important election, we need all the unbiased information we can get on every topic we face. Forcing our environmental organizations to stay quiet while we are in the throes of educating ourselves on the facts is tantamount to coercion and perhaps even extortion: extracting a forced silence under threat of penalty.
What’s really hilarious about this whole thing is Bermier’s reaction. This is the guy who says climate change is NOT a thing:
His tweet stated: “EC is interpreting a bad law as best it can, but this rule is still absurd. Not because we’re the only party with a different perspective which climate alarmists believe is not legitimate. But because it is arbitrary, draconian, and cannot be applied consistently.” He added, “There are hundreds of potentially contentious issues that could be considered partisan if this rule were to be applied consistently,” Bernier said.
He thinks it’s an unwarranted decision too!
It seems to me, EC is setting a bad precedent and confusing Canadians between facts and unfair advertising propaganda. Most Canadians are like me with their understanding of the electoral process: they like what a party stands for or they don’t; they like a particular leader and what they say or they don’t. The technical shit means nothing to them. So seeing something like this in the news will immediately make an impression on the general public. Suddenly, not only will climate change be a questionable issue, but those parties who take it seriously and make it a priority will be challenged and possibly denounced for it.
It’s not a game of Monopoly, ffs!
I feel like EC really missed the point on this one, peeps. Green Party leader, Elizabeth May, feels EC will figure it out and fix it. She said, “This is lunacy,…Elections Canada is not a lunatic organization so I trust they will clarify and eliminate this ruling.”
Jagmeet Singh, leader of the NDP, said, “It’s not partisan to discuss the single greatest threat faced by humanity,” NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said of climate change.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed concern that there are still conservative leaders who do not consider climate change a serious matter, but he trusts EC will make the appropriate decision on this ruling.

It’s all just too much for me, peeps.
Burn the rules, mofos, this is our earth! I think this transcends any man-made rules at this point. Send Bermier and EC to the arctic to tell the polar bears it’s all in their heads. Bet the rules won’t mean much then.
